Chill Out: Meet the relaxing drink with hemp extract from Coca Cola

Coca-Cola Japan has been selling Chill Out since August 2020, a product whose concept is to be the “relaxing drink of the next generation”, according to a statement issued by the company. The same statement goes on to say: “Information overload and stress are currently on the rise. What you need is not energy, but relaxation.”

Chill Out contains hemp seed not marijuana

One of the drink's ingredients that has been causing discussions is hemp extract (or hemp, as it is known in Brazil). Hemp is a variety of Cannabis sativa, better known in Brazil by the common name of marijuana. The concentration of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in hemp is 0,3%, much lower than in marijuana.

Consumption of hemp products is not illegal in Japan or the United States. However, a curious detail has been drawing attention to the relaxing drink of Coca Cola. US military personnel based in Japan are prohibited from experimenting with and consuming the Chill Out. All this because the drink can cause false positive results in drug tests.

According to a memorandum issued by the US Department of Defense, "it is not possible to differentiate THC derived from hemp or illicit marijuana, which may effectively impair the Department's ability to identify illicit THC use."

O Chill Out was originally developed by a Japanese technology company in the beauty area called I-ne, which recently created Endian, a beverage company that received investment from Coca-Cola to jointly market the relaxing drink in Japan.
In addition to hemp extract, the drink has among its ingredients vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, folic acid, GABA and L-theanine.
GABA, the better known name for gamma-aminobutyric acid, is a substance produced in the brain known to have a relaxing effect on the nervous system and to be effective in relieving high blood pressure and nausea.
L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea and some mushrooms and is used to improve mental function and relieve anxiety and stress.
The product does not contain caffeine, uses sugar derived from fruit juice and other natural ingredients such as lemon juice and moscato grape.
