The Ushiku Daibutsu was built in 1993 in commemoration of the birthday of Shinran, founder of the Jodo Shinshu or "True School of the Pure Land", one of the branches of Buddhism and depicts the Amitaba Buddha. It is also known as Ushiku Arcadia (Amida's Radiance and Compassion Actually Developing and Illuminating Area).
Visitors can take an elevator up to the observatory room which is 85 meters high. From the observatory, you can even see the Skytree, the famous tower in central Tokyo.
A complete visit to the site includes the 3 interior halls in the statue, the surrounding flower gardens and a mini-zoo that is also located there.
