About 153 people die at Halloween party in South Korea

At least 153 people were killed and 82 injured after a riot broke out in Seoul's Itaewon neighborhood on Saturday night. Victims were crushed or trampled during the melee. South Korean officials said the dead included 26 foreigners from 15 countries.

There was an incident during the Halloween celebration on a narrow slope full of bars and restaurants. Many young people were present at the party at the time of the tragedy.

Events celebrating Halloween in Seoul were the first in three years after the South Korean government relaxed restrictions against the coronavirus pandemic. A large crowd joined the celebration in the popular Itaewon neighborhood. About 100 people were in the area Saturday night, according to local media.

The deaths of two Japanese women, aged between 10 and 20, were also confirmed in the incident according to a Japanese Foreign Ministry official.
